Living A Cupertino LEgacy

In the nineteenth century, Cupertino was a small rural village at the crossroads of Stevens Creek Road and Saratoga-Mountain View Road. Saratoga-Mountain View Road was also known as Highway 9; and later Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road. In present times, it has been renamed to De Anza Boulevard within the Cupertino city limits.

The primary economic activity was fruit agriculture. Almost all of the land within Cupertino's present-day boundaries was covered by prune, plum, apricot, and cherry orchards. A winery on Montebello Ridge overlooking the Cupertino valley region was operating by the late 19th century when railroads, electric railways, and dirt roads traversed the West Side farmlands.

Monta Vista, was Cupertino's first housing tract developed in the mid-20th century as a result of the electric railway construction. After World War II, a population and suburban housing boom shifted the demographics and economy of the Santa Clara Valley. The area was known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" and was beginning to transform into "Silicon Valley".

Today Cupertino is home to more than a few of the worlds most innovative and pioneering companies. It is a hub for growing start-ups and world class technology.
